Driving the 65 Mod Cars – Tips for Novices & Base Setups

The 65 mod is probably the easiest of the GPL mods, yet it is still very challenging and takes a lot of effort to drive its cars on the limit consistently. In this relatively short post I will try to layout the basics of driving the 65 cars, but with a focus on beginner or novices drivers, using more conservative setups and driving techniques.

The track of choice for this tutorial is Kyalami, for it has a combination of fast and slow corners, with a nice flow to it (even though it’s not a favorite of mine). What I did was make  a base setup for each of the 7 cars and have done some hotlapping around the track, using my right foot for braking instead of the left one which I normally use. The replays and setups for each car can be downloaded at the bottom of this post.

Possibly the Closest Finish in UKGPL History?

Last night’s Pro ’65 race of UKGPL’s Season 21 was simply magnificent! Battling throughout the whole race, slipstreaming and exchanging positions with Natan, Fulvio and Raoni – it was a race to remember!

What was the best about it though, was the finish of the race! Since pictures say more than a 1000 words, here are a few screenshots to mark this memorable moment! And if you’re wondering about the gap, it was 3 thousands of a second in favor of Raoni. 🙂

East London Track Guide for Honda RA272 – GPL 1965 Mod

Note: Replay and Setup can be downloaded at the end of the post.

It’s been a long time since I did a track guide, but there have been many reasons, the most important being that I had corrupted sound in GPL which would’ve been inappropriate to record onboard laps with.

Karlis had asked me to do a guide for East London before the Novices race there the coming Tuesday, so here it is! Continue reading

Adelaide Track Guide and Onboard Lap in 1965 Honda RA272

Note: Replay and Setup can be downloaded at the end of the post.

After seeing many people struggle with driving at Adelaide and before the upcoming Novices race, I did a couple of runs in the last few days to record a good lap and make this track guide.

Although I used the BT7 initially, for which I had a good setup already and it didn’t took many laps to produce a decent lap, it was not the case with the Honda. I haven’t really driven it much, and the demands of this track are different so it took me a awhile to figure out a setup and driving style which worked consistently with that car. Continue reading

Mastering Jarama in Honda RA300 – Onboard Lap, Track Guide, Replay and Setup

Note: Replay and Setup can be downloaded at the end of the post.

After messing up the last race on the last lap and most likely killing my chances for the championship, I’m looking forward to this race as the last one this season where I have a chance for winning. After that it’s just Monza where a bunch of Lotus, Eagle and Ferrari drivers are probably going to have the upper-hand.

Brutal Lapping Onboard the 69 Mod Matra MS80 at Rouen-les-Essarts

Note: Replay and Setup can be downloaded at the end of the post.

A Look at the Track

Rouen’s characteristics have always given me a mixed feeling about the track. On one hand I like the flowing fast bends which give you a challenge of how much speed you dare to carry on going into them, but on the other hand the high sharp curbs and slow hairpins can (and will) easily give you some grief if you’re not precise enough.

How to Do a Fast Lap of Edmonton in Grand Prix Legends, in Honda RA300

Note: Replay and Setup can be downloaded at the end of the post.

I’ve driven Edmonton a few times in the past and always in the original 67 cars, but it never been a track I enjoyed or had great results at. Despite that, the practice run I did today in my trustworthy Honda was productive and positive, and I quickly arrived to a setup which seems to handle consistently and keep the tire temps within reasonable limits.

We Have Our Own Forums Now!

Due to the UKGPL forums having some problems for a couple of days now, I decided to install and manage our own forums here at our blog. For the moment I’ve made a general discussion board, a private Hiki-Waza team board (which is only accessible by members I give the correct permissions to) and an alternative UKGPL board to act for any sort of discussion related to the league in cases as this one that’s going on at the moment.

There are a lot of options for the forum system and I haven’t figured them all out yet, so please let me know if you notice any problems or have suggestions to improve the interface and structure of the boards.

Heating Up at Mexico City in the Chaparral Mk2F – Onboard Lap, Track Guide and Setups

Note: Replay and Setup can be downloaded at the end of the post.

I haven’t driven the new mod so much yet, but after missing the first race in the non-official UKGPL series last Friday, I thought I would do some laps at Mexico and try out different setup tweaks in the Chaparral Mk2F.

I find the car quite nice to drive, but the 3 speed gearbox makes it really difficult to feel the car and to judge the speed at which I’m going at any time, particularly in slower corners where it feels like the engine shuts off completely. Continue reading

Conquering Kyalami in 1965 Brabham BT7 – Onboard Lap and Track Guide

Note: Replay and Setup can be downloaded at the end of the post.

I’ve never been a fan of Kyalami. It’s one of those tracks which require ultra-smooth style, perfect precision for your braking and entry points, and punishes any unnecessary correction with either the throttle, brake or steering wheel. This is definitely against my preferred rally-like style, so the conscious effort required to adapt here has always been greater. Despite that, I’ve always seemed to have good results at this track and also some great races, with prolonged battles and many passes.
